Basic Pump Troubleshooting
IMPELLER TYPES IMPELLER TYPES
If your pump is not functioning correctly, use this list to try and determine the problem: Check the pump casing is filled with water. Do not run dry.
Ensure the delivery line is not closed. The strainer, inlet valve or suction line may be clogged. The suction lift may be too high. At a 6 m lift, the pump delivers only about 50% of the water it could at a 3 m lift. The suction hose may be too long, causing excessive friction loss and reducing pump performance. If so, move the pump closer to the water. The discharge head may be too high. Check hose or pipe friction losses. A larger hose or pipe may correct this condition or use a higher pressure pump.
Inspect at the suction line or fittings. Check that all fittings are airtight in the suction line and that there is no leak in the hose or fittings. The engine may not be running at the rated speed. A worn mechanical seal can cause air or water leaks. Check the pump weep hole and replace the seal immediately if leaking. Overtime, internal wear can reduce pumps performance due to excessive clearance between impeller & volute. Refer to pump dealer for inspection.

General Maintenance
Check monthly or for high usage applications such as water tankers, dewatering or irrigation applications we recommend checking the following weekly. Crankcase oil level Spark plug condition Air cleaner Unusual engine noise Proper RPM Oil filter Check the impeller every six months for wear and clearance between the impeller face and the volute. Refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Check the mechanical seal for wear - quickly rectify any leaks from the pump or inlet hose.
