EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP ARMAMENTARIUM FOR BURNISHED CALCULUS MANAGEMENT Lecturer: Dr. Consolata Pejrone
LECTURER AND WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
Dr. Consolata Pejrone, has a Certificate Degree in Dental Hygiene from Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists and a Associate Degree of Science in Dental Hygiene by the Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts (USA). She had obtained the Expanded Functions for Dental Hygienists certifyed by the University of California, Los Angeles (USA). Successfully atteined the National Board for Dental Hygienists, the Northeast Regional Board in Boston and the California Board at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. After completing her undergraduate degree in Genoa, Italy, she attended the post graduate course in Community Health and WHO procedures by the Chair of Pedodontics at the University of Milan, Italy and got the Masters Degree in Preventive Dentistry by the University La Sapienza of Rome, Italy. Teacher for over 25 years, at first at the Dental Hygiene School and Dental School at the University of Genoa and then faculty member in the Dental Hygiene School at the University of Turin, Italy. At the day she practices the profession as dental hygienist in different private practices in Northern Italy and she is consultant and clinical coordinator for the EMEA area for Hu-Friedy. She volunteers in several local communities with special needing children, mothers, teenagers and immigrants with the COI (Cooperazione Odontoiatrica Internazionale). Speaker of several national and international continuing educational programs, she holds lectures to dental hygienists, dental assistants, general dentists, periodontists, medical doctors.
Basic instrumentation for non-surgical maintenance therapy
Level 1
NON-SURGICAL INSTRUMENTATION
Advanced instrumentation for non-surgical periodontal therapy
Level 2
Hand instrumentation for implants and prosthetic surfaces
Level 3
SHARPENING OF NON-SURGICAL INSTRUMENTATION
Why should we still choose hand instruments that can be sharpened?
NON SURGICAL INSTRUMENTATION BASIC
Basic instrumentation for non-surgical maintenance therapy
LEARNING OUTCOMES
The objective of the course is to develop the students‘ knowledge of basic non- surgical periodontal hand instrumentation, the use of curettes and scalers (scaling and root-planing techniques) and their maintenance (instru- ments sharpening). At the end of the seminar, the students will be able to recognize and choose hand instruments like scalers, uni- versal curettes and area- specific curettes (Graceys) and how to implement them on typodont models.
PART 1 THEORETICAL PART • Basic concepts of dental anatomy and fulcrums • Clinician positioning around the patient • Use of periodontal probes and explorers • Use of scalers for supragingival debridement • Use of curettes for supra and subgingival curettes PART 2 PRACTICE ON TYPODONTS • Clinician positioning around the patient • Intraoral fulcrums and extraoral fulcrums • Implementation of periodontal probes and explorers • Implementation of scalers (anterior and posterior) on the healthy or periodontal maintenance patient • Implementation of universal curettes on the healthy or periodontal maintenance patient • Implementation of area-specific curettes (Graceys) on the healthy or periodontal maintenance patient
LEVEL 1
NON SURGICAL INSTRUMENTATION ADVANCED
Advanced instrumentation for non-surgical periodontal therapy PART 1 THEORETICAL PART • Basic concepts of root anatomy in perio disease and fulcrums • Use of periodontal explorers • Characteristics of scalers; universal curettes; Graceys: After Fives, Mini Fives, Biogent; hoes PART 2 PRACTICE ON TYPODONTS • Clinician positioning around the patient • Intraoral fulcrums and extraoral fulcrums • Implementation of periodontal explorers • Implementation of: universal curettes; Graceys: After Fives, Mini Fives, Biogent; hoes on periodontally compromised typodont models
LEARNING OUTCOMES
The objective of the course is to develop the students‘ knowledge of advanced non- surgical periodontal hand instrumentation in periodontally compromised clinical settings. The use of curettes and scalers (scaling and root-planing techniques) for periodontal debridement in diseased periodontal anatomy. At the end of the seminar, the students will be able to recognize and choose hand instruments like scalers, universal curettes, area-specific curettes (Graceys) and hoes for advanced instrumentation in periodontal defects (deep perio pockets, furcations) and how to implement them on typodont models.
LEVEL 2
LEARNING OUTCOMES The objective of the course is to help students recognize the different parts of an implant and care for it. They will be able to choose between different typologies of hand instruments based on the surface to be cared for. NON SURGICAL INSTRUMENTATION IMPLANT MAINTENACE
Hand instrumentation for implants and prosthetic surfaces PART 1 THEORETICAL PART • Basic concepts of implant anatomy and materials • Use of Colorvue implant probes • Characteristics of Implacare II made with Plasteel: scalers (anterior and posterior) and universal curettes • Use and characteristics of Titanium Implant Scalers (Titanium Implant Scalers can be used in combination with Implacare II) • Q&A PART 2 PRACTICE ON TYPODONTS • Recognition of implant materials and of the above prosthetic abutment • Implementation of Colorvue probes • Implementation of Implacare II scalers and universal curettes • Implementation of Titanium Implant Scalers
LEVEL 3
NON SURGICAL INSTRUMENTATION SHARPENING
PART 1 THEORETICAL PART • Advantages of a good sharpening technique • When to sharpen • Review of the topology of scalers and curettes • Materials and techniques for sharpening • Most common errors • Q&A PART 2 PRACTICE ON TYPODONTS • Stones and semi-mechanical tools • Checking techniques • Sharpening stone-motion manual technique for scalers and curettes Why should we still choose hand instruments that can be sharpened?
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Objective: after the course, the students will understand why sharpening is essential to best perform clinically and make the life of one’s instrument much longer. The students will be able to choose the tools to perform sharpening (stones, manual vs semiautomatic), the stone- moving technique to sharpen scalers and curettes, the methods to check if the instrument is sharp and the most common errors while sharpening.
