GINGIVAL RECESSION DEFECTS

Characteristics and treatment modalities from basic to advanced

LEARNING OUTCOMES The objective of the course is to introduce students to the management of gingival recession defects, their etiology, classification and treatment modalities, from basic to advanced techniques. At the end of the seminar, the students will be able to identify and diagnose mucogingival defects, understand why and when to proceed with treatment and what outcomes can be expected depending on the patients pre-surgical status. They will also learn key communication narratives to help their patients understand the value of healthy gums. Students will learn treatment guidelines, how to perform different root coverage surgical techniques and harvest sub-epithelial connective tissue.

PART 1 THEORETICAL PART • Characteristics and classification of gingival recession defects • Etiological factors • Treatment strategies and prognosis • Microsurgical instrumentation • Coronal Advanced Flap: different flap designs, indications • Sub-epithelial connective tissue graft harvesting procedures: anatomical and technical aspects • Tunneling technique: flap design, indication PART 2 HANDS-ON Students will practice on fresh animal jaw models, with microsurgical hand instruments, resorbable and nonresorbable sutures. • Full and partial thickness flap management • Coronally Advanced Flap technique (classic and modified technique) • Different sub-epithelial connective tissue graft harvesting techniques • Tunneling technique • Different suturing methods

PERI-IMPLANT SOFT TISSUE MANAGEMENT

Treatment strategies

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Natural and harmonious results around dental implants located in the esthetic area calls for the preservation - and sometimes the reconstruction - of soft tissues. During this course, the students will realize how quality and quantity of peri-implant soft tissues are the key elements when it comes to achieving aesthetic treatment outcomes. Students will learn all aspects of soft tissue management during the different phases of the implant treatment, how to preserve and/or create a natural soft tissue emergence profile.

PART 1 THEORETICAL PART • Soft tissue management before the implant treatment • Socket seal technique • Soft tissue management during the implant treatment • Soft tissue management and provisional implant- supported restorations • Soft tissue management after the implant treatment PART 2 HANDS-ON Students will practice on typodont jaw models, with microsurgical instruments and implant. • Free gingival graft and socket seal technique • Papilla reconstruction technique • Connective tissue grafting • Palatal pedicle rotation connective tissue graft

PERI-IMPLANT BIOLOGICAL COMPLICATIONS

Definition, prevalence, risk factors and treatment strategies PART 1 THEORETICAL PART • Peri-implant tissues: examination procedures • Peri-implant biological complications: definitions and prevalence • Peri-implantitis vs periodontitis • Risk factors • Non-surgical treatment • Surgical treatment • Use of systemic antibiotics and antiseptics in the treatment of peri-implantitis • Reconstructive surgical procedures PART 2 HANDS-ON Students will practice on typodont jaw models, with microsurgical instruments, implants and different oral hygiene products. • Peri-implant tissue examination • Plaque control procedures around implant • Manipulation of hand instruments around implants • Debridement of the lesion and implant surface decontamination • Resective and reconstructive surgical procedures • Suturing techniques

LEARNING OUTCOMES

During this course, the students will be able to perform a comprehensive examination of the peri-implant tissues, and to diagnose biological complications. The students will understand important differences between periodontitis and peri-implantitis. They will also analyze the available literature on the prevalence of peri- implantitis and discuss risk factors. The available literature on the treatment of peri-implantitis will be analyzed and potential benefits of different procedures proposed will be discussed. • At the end of the course, the students will be able to answer the following questions: • Can peri-implantitis be treated nonsurgically? • What should we use for implant surface decontamination? • Should we use systemic antibiotics? • Should we use bone substitute materials? • What is the risk for recurrence of the disease?
