GRAND POLEMARCH’S MESSAGE Spring Into Purpose: Harnessing the Season of Possibility

My Brothers, A s spring blossoms around us, I bring you fraternal greetings and hope that the energizing spirit of this season triggers a renewed sense of purpose, dedication and growth within you. I find myself reflecting on the life of our fraternity, and how our Founders and organizational founding provided a source of hope, support, inspiration and empowerment to a campus community that sorely needed the impact of their efforts. That narra- tive has come full circle, as we stand at a critical time in our nation’s history. The communities that we serve need Kappa Alpha Psi® to have the same effect. This is not a time for passivity, but a time for purposeful action. As the world watches and history is being written in real time, we are uniquely positioned to change lives, uplift communities, rewrite narratives and shape the future with intention and purpose. Each program that we facilitate, every initiative we lead, every voice that we uplift, and every space we enter offers us a chance to redefine what’s possible as men of achievement. We are laying the groundwork for what I believe will be an extraordinary

summer. On the horizon is our Grand Chapter Meeting in Phoenix, which will be the culminating experience of the summer months. I couldn’t be more excited as we plan to gather in person to fellowship, celebrate our achievements, enjoy our bond of fraternity and continue building the momentum that makes Kappa Alpha Psi more relevant and significant. I am proud of what we’ve accom- plished together in service to the fraternity that we hold dear, and how we continue to raise the bar in pursuit of our fundamental purpose of achieve- ment and in our continual pursuit of excellence. Let’s continue to seize the opportunities and possibilities within

our purview as mandates for transfor- mation. I thank every one of you for the role that you play in our ongoing story of achievement. As you turn the pages of this spring edition of the Kappa Alpha Psi Journal , we hope that it inspires you, informs you, and excites you. There- fore, I invite you to settle in, explore boldly, and discover more about what makes this fraternity great.

Yours in the Bond,

JOURNAL NOTES 87TH GRAND CHAPTER MEETING

A Legacy of Leadership, A Future in Focus

A s we reflect on the enduring impact of the 35th Admin- istration of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., this era will be remem- bered not just for milestones—but for the movement it inspired. Under the visionary leadership of Grand Polemarch Jimmy McMikle, the 35th reignited the flame of undergraduate empowerment, redefined leadership training, and championed fraterni- ty-wide accessibility that reached every province, chapter, and brother. What set this administration apart was its belief in the capacity of under- graduate brothers—not as future leaders, but as leaders now. Through the revitalization of the Council of Junior Province Vice Polemarchs and enhanced roles for Undergraduate Grand Chapter Officers, a bold realign- ment unfolded. Brothers closest to the collegiate experience were entrusted with tools, responsibilities, and plat- forms to lead. Through onboarding programs, chapter visits, and targeted training, leadership became not merely an aspiration—but an expectation. Equally transformative was the com- mitment to connection. Grand Chapter Officers, the Executive Committee, and national committee chairs became accessible mentors, not distant figure- heads. Whether through social media or on-the-ground presence, fraternity

leadership modeled an open-door phi- losophy—one that listens, responds, and shows up. The reach of the 35th extended far beyond ceremonial halls. Kappa Men are now serving in federal, state, and local government—as legislators, advo- cates, commissioners, and mayors. In boardrooms, courtrooms, classrooms, and city councils, they are shaping pol- icies and transforming communities. Excellence in achievement is no longer abstract—it’s evident in lives touched and decisions influenced. Innovation also thrived digitally. Through curated campaigns and livestreams, the Administration’s use of social media brought our Brother- hood closer together and expanded “AS WE TURN TO THE 87TH GRAND CHAPTER MEETING IN PHOENIX, THE TORCH IS PASSED WITH PRIDE AND PRECISION. ”

our reach. Our digital presence became more vibrant, more visible, and more aligned with our values—giving broth- ers across the globe front-row access to Kappa’s evolution. No reflection would be complete with- out celebrating The Kappa Alpha Psi Journal . Under the creative direction of Aliatu Burke—supported by the striking imagery of Michael Hume, Gregory L. Williams, and Kevin Sellers, and the steadfast support of Executive Director John F. Burrell—the Journal has become a visual and narrative embodiment of Kappa’s excellence. It doesn’t just docu- ment history—it defines it. As we turn to the 87th Grand Chapter Meeting in Phoenix, the torch is passed with pride and precision. The foundation laid by the 35th empowers us to dream bolder, lead stronger, and serve deeper. In Kappa Alpha Psi, leadership is not just a moment—it is a method. Let us meet the future with open arms and ever-achieving hearts

Phoenix (AZ) Alumni Chapter Hosts the 87th Grand Chapter Meeting

K nown as the “Valley of the Sun” for its year-round sunshine and warm desert climate, Phoenix, Arizona, has long symbolized resilience, brilliance, and vitality. Against this backdrop, the Phoenix (AZ) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. stands proudly as host of the 87th Grand Chapter Meeting—a role that is both an honor and a testament to decades of unwavering commitment to achievement in every field of human endeavor. FROM CHARTERING TO FRATERNAL HOST The Phoenix Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. traces its roots back to April 14, 1947, when six visionary brothers gathered at the home of Dr. Thomas Crump to form what was then the Tucson-Phoenix Alumni Chapter. Just two months later, on June 18, 1947, Brother Frank F. LaVigne, Western Province Polemarch, presided over the official charter ceremony and installation of officers at the home of Brother Thomas Brown. The inaugural officers included:

Now, nearly eight decades later, that same spirit of achievement propels the chapter as it hosts the 87th Grand Chapter Meeting over the July 4th holiday weekend. This momentous responsibility involves coordinating logistics, hospitality, community engagement, and cultural experi- ences for brothers and guests from across the country. DUTY AND DISTINCTION As host, the Phoenix Alumni Chapter has meticulously pre- pared to welcome delegates and attendees. With the influx of holiday tourism and heightened demand for accommoda- tions, restaurants, and venues, the chapter has strategically planned events to avoid overlap with citywide July 4th fes- tivities. Safety protocols, compliance with local ordinances, and smooth transportation are paramount. The chapter also embraces its role as ambassador, spot- lighting local attractions such as the Phoenix Zoo, Desert Botanical Garden, and historic Papago Park. Attendees are invited to enjoy celebrations like the Fabulous Phoenix 4th at Steele Indian School Park, the Arizona Celebration of Freedom in Mesa, and fireworks over Tempe Town Lake. By hosting this Grand Chapter Meeting, the Phoenix Alum- ni Chapter honors its legacy while embracing its future—a future guided by leadership, scholarship, and brotherhood. Led by Chapter Polemarch Zenji Reynolds and Host Chap- ter Committee Chairman Dr. Derek Blythe, Kappa Alpha Psi is in great hands as it experiences all that the Valley of the Sun has to offer. ♦

The ceremony began at midnight and concluded at 4:45 a.m., reflecting the dedication and spirit that continue to define the chapter.

LEADING WITH PURPOSE IN HEALTHCARE AND BROTHERHOOD

Z enji Reynolds, CEO of Southwest Shoulder Elbow & Hand Center, P.C. and Polemarch of the Phoenix (AZ) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., is a leader whose influence spans the medical field and the fraternal world. A 2019 initiate of the Phoenix Alumni Chapter, Reynolds currently presides over the chapter during the historic 87th Grand Chapter Meeting in 2025. His story is one of mentorship, mission, and meaningful service. “I lead by putting patients first,” Reynolds says. “Every decision—whether it involves growth, staffing, or strategy—must serve the people who entrust us with their care.” Reynolds’ journey into healthcare began early. Influenced by his mother, Betty Reyn- olds, who worked in the allied health department at Columbus State, he became a certified phlebotomist at age 16. This experience, paired with a deep sense of compassion, sparked a lifelong passion for patient care. Since joining Southwest Shoulder Elbow & Hand Center in 2023, he has led the organization with precision and purpose, launching a profitable physical therapy division within nine months. He credits his brother, former NFL player Derrick Rodgers, and healthcare mentor David Wagner, with shaping his career. Today, Reynolds pays that forward, mentoring young healthcare professionals and pushing them toward leadership. As Polemarch of the Phoenix Alumni Chapter—founded in 1947 and known for its commitment to youth and civic service—Reynolds is a guiding force behind several impactful initiatives. Under his leadership, the chapter has revitalized its Kappa League program, inspiring young men through academic mentoring, STEM exposure, and personal development. “Leadership isn’t about titles. It’s about service and consistency,” he explains. “Whether I’m in the clinic or with my chapter brothers, I make sure we lead with care and accountability.” The chapter’s Adopt-A-School program at Clovis Campbell Elementary has become a beacon of its mission. It provides gym equipment, runs a book contest, and rewards excel- lence with bicycles. In collaboration with civic organizations like Our Voice Our Vote, the chapter has engaged over 500 voters in critical election awareness. “There’s no such thing as a small act of service,” Reynolds reflects. “Every step forward— no matter how local or personal—builds something greater for our community and our fraternity.” Whether navigating the complexities of modern healthcare or nurturing the next genera- tion of leaders in Kappa Alpha Psi, Zenji Reynolds remains steadfast in his mission: to serve, uplift, and inspire. ♦

BRIDGING SCIENTIFIC INNOVATION AND FRATERNAL LEADERSHIP

D r. Derek C. Blythe (Alpha Pi 2005) exemplifies the dual excellence of academic bril- liance and visionary leadership. A distinguished statistician and committed fraternity brother, Dr. Blythe has made significant contributions in both the biomedical research community and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. His journey is a compelling narrative of intellect, service, and purpose-driven achievement. “It is especially important for men of achievement—no matter our color, nationality, or ethnicity—to be role models in our communities and to recognize the importance of giving back,” Blythe shared, reflecting his commitment to mentoring and community uplift. This dedication to excellence is mirrored in his professional career. Dr. Blythe currently serves as a Senior Staff Biostatistician at Illumina, a leader in genomic sequencing and bioinformatics. He has been with Illumina since 2021, following a successful tenure as a Staff Biostatistician. Prior to this, he spent eight years at Intel Corporation, where he applied statistical modeling and process control in global manufacturing operations. At Intel, he developed the Process Control Systems Portal, used worldwide across their assembly and test facilities. His academic roots run deep. Dr. Blythe earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Statistics from Iowa State University, after completing his B.S. in Mathematics from Langston University. During his doctoral studies, he contributed to cutting-edge research in viral transmission mecha- nisms. One of his most impactful works was co-authoring the article, “Decreased Infectivity of a Neutralization-Resistant Equine Infectious Anemia Virus Variant Can Be Overcome by Efficient Cell-to-Cell Spread,” published in the Journal of Virology in 2011. The study revealed how a variant of the equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV), despite being resistant to neutralizing antibodies, regained virulence through highly efficient cell-to-cell transmis- sion. This discovery provided valuable insights into how lentiviruses, such as HIV-1, can circumvent traditional immune defenses. Dr. Blythe stands as a powerful example of what it means to lead with intellect and pur- pose. Whether modeling viral dynamics at the molecular level or mapping strategic growth for a fraternal chapter, his focus remains clear: excellence, service, and impact. ♦

2025 AWARDEES 87TH GRAND CHAPTER MEETING

#KLAVE2025

Elder Watson Diggs Award Seventy-one years ago, during the closing minutes of the 43rd Grand Chapter Meeting, December 27-30, 1953, the Chicago Conclave delegates ratified a motion to estab- lish a “Diggs Achievement Award,” second only to the coveted Laurel Wreath. Since the mechanisms and criteria for bestowing the honor were not yet determined, the Achievement Commission decided this award would not be granted until the specifics were resolved. Five years later, the Grand Board of Directors conferred the first Elder W. Diggs Awards at the 47th Grand Chapter Meeting. Then, as today, the primary standard of eligibility for evaluation to receive the award is based on a member’s exceptional meritorious contributions to the ideals, purposes, and programs of the Fraternity or its members. Initially, only three of these prestigious awards were offered for each Conclave year and had to be recommended by their Province Polemarch. In 1958, Grand Polemarch C. Rodger Wilson proclaimed to the first three recipients, Ulysses G. Plummer, E. Thomas Scales, and John N. Williams, “For sacrifices and services to Kappa Alpha Psi over and beyond the call of duty, we are delighted to recognize your contri- butions and present this Elder Watson Diggs Award as an expression of our appreci- ation.” These initial recipients were given a key and a certificate, accompanied by a citation similar and equal to that provided in conjunction with the Laurel Wreath. Today, the Achievement Commission can recommend up to five candidate petitions to the Grand Board of Directors for consideration to receive the honor. They receive a medallion bearing the likeness of Elder W. Diggs and a framed certificate of merit.
