Vegas (NV) 1967), who entered Chapter Invisible on January 27, 2025, at 95. The fifth of six children, Theron Hulan Goynes, was born August 20, 1929, to the late Willie Mae Harrison and Hulan Edwin Goynes in Texarkana, TX. In 1952, Goynes earned a B.A. in business adminis- tration from Prairie View A&M University. Later that year, he entered the United States Air Force and served for four years. After serving four years in the United States Air Force and receiv- ing an honorable discharge, he started teaching in 1956. Goynes and his wife taught students on the Navajo Indian Reservation in San Juan County before moving to Las Vegas in 1964. During his 27-year career with the district, Goynes served as a teacher, counselor, adult education coordinator, elementary assistant principal, and

principal. Theron H. and Naomi D. Goynes Ele- mentary STEM Academy opened in 2005 to honor their devotedness to education. Goynes also served 27 years on the North Las Vegas City Council. Twelve of those years he was Mayor Pro Tempore. On September 18, 1981, he chaired the North Las Vegas City Council meeting in the mayor’s absence, thus becoming the first Black elected representa- tive to head a government body in Nevada’s 117-year history officially. He received numerous awards and appointments for his involvement in local, state, and national activities. He was honored as “Public Official of the Year” in

T he Hartford (CT) Alumni Chapter mourns the passing of Michael J. Harris (Nu Psi 1993), who entered the Chapter Invisible on January 7, 2025. Born at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford on September 25, 1968, son of Louise Banks Harris and the late James Harris, he was raised in Hartford, attended St. Justin’s Catholic School, and graduated from North- west Catholic High School, Class of 1986. After high school, Harris earned a B.A. from the University of Hart- ford and an MBA from the University of Connecticut.

1992. Goynes was a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Brother Theron H. Goynes was preceded in death by his wife Naomi Delores Jackson Goynes. He is survived by his three children Kimberly Goynes, Byron (Lydia) Goynes and Pamela (Romero) Goynes- Brown; five grandchildren, Bobby Owens III, Mahlia Posey, Joi Goynes, Michael Owens and Joshua Goynes and one great-grandchild, Ember Owens. ♦
