Peat, a toad, and Paul-Paulette, an earthworm, live in the woods beneath the roots of their friend, Christy, a Christmas fern. One day they are dug up and carried away. Christy is replanted in a pot large enough to hold Paul-Paulette, but Peat is too big to get in and cannot completely hide. He stays under Christy's fronds, but can't disappear. Together with their wild flower friends, they are taken to the Washington National Cathedral to participate in the annual Festival of Flowers. While the plants are being carried into the cathedral, Peat is discovered, picked up and left in the Garth - the small, enclosed garden near the base of the stairs. This is the story of the little toad's adventure as he tries to find his plant and animal friends in the huge building. It is a tour of the cathedral and an introduction to cathedral architecture inside and out. A short glossary of architecture terms is included.

With the help of sixty-year-old black jazz man Lucius, Mary Kaye O'Donnell, an eighteen-year-old Irish-American woman and aspiring jazz singer in Chicago, finds her way toward dealing with an unwanted pregnancy and the death of Sister Michaeline, her voice coach, jazz mentor, and only guide through the bedlam of her childhood. Mary Kaye's neighbor, Judge Engelmann, introduced her to the work of James Baldwin and the nuns exposed her to the burgeoning civil rights movement, but Lucius is the first black person Mary Kaye comes to really know. They bond over Sister Michaeline's untimely death. Over time, Lucius helps Mary Kaye launch her career as a singer in his jazz band. He also gives her Sister Michaeline's diary from her early cloistered years, saying it was the nun's wish. In reading the diary and in conversations with Lucius and Judge Engelmann, Mary Kaye discovers disillusioning aspects and secrets of her beloved mentor. This is Mary Kaye's coming-of-age story as she weighs her options based on the diary, her faith, and her music, set against the background of illegal abortion and child abandonment in the 1963 Chicago world of civil rights and interracial jazz. It is entirely a work of fiction, but in today's political climate one could imagine something similar becoming real.

In this powerful and eye-opening new edition of Progressives, Leftists, and Black America, author Brian Oglesby returns with an expanded and updated analysis of the real-world impact progressive policies have had on Black communities in the United States. With added chapters, refined arguments, and timely reflections on recent political and cultural shifts, this edition takes the conversation deeper than ever before. Oglesby unapologetically confronts the widely accepted belief that progressive and leftist ideologies have been beneficial to Black Americans. Instead, he offers a well-reasoned critique, exposing how decades of liberal policy-making have eroded family structures, weakened educational systems, and fostered generational dependence on government programs. From the breakdown of the nuclear family to the rise of identity politics, this book challenges readers to examine the unintended consequences of political loyalty and ideological conformity. This edition includes new material analyzing recent national events, shifts in party platforms, and the cultural narrative surrounding race, equity, and justice. Oglesby also addresses how faith, entrepreneurship, and personal responsibility can serve as pathways toward lasting empowerment and liberation. Passionate, data-driven, and deeply personal, Progressives, Leftists, and Black America is more than a political critique-it's a rallying cry for intellectual independence, cultural restoration, and a renewed vision for the future of Black America.

Whether you're a policymaker, educator, activist, or everyday citizen, this book will challenge your assumptions and expand your perspective.

It is 2058. NYPD detective Nick Garvey and Lenora Allison, President of the battered and reeling United States, are battling the many remnants of the murderous World Council. They must confront the forced introduction of a man-made, killer plague and the destruction of the newly created Friendship City.

President Allison succeeded in her fight to destroy the first plague only to learn a second more deadly one was imminent.

Ishmael, the mysterious new leader of the World Council, has decided to destroy Friendship City, an autonomous joining of Brownsville, Texas and Matamoros, Mexico, where the citizens are developing their own protective Bill of Rights.

President Allison asks Nick to fly from Houston, where his daughter is recovering from a coma, to the White House to help in the fight.

Can the second plague be destroyed? Why is Friendship City spiraling into chaos? Can Ishmael be destroyed?

Nick wrestles to find Ishmael but Ishmael finds him first. Capturing Nick, President Allison, Nick's family, and all others in his way, he forces them to sit in a circle, surrounded by rifles. Ishmael starts his countdown.

This book is a quick summary of a family's survival of the trials and hardships of the Great Depression. It is a look at one boy's unique World War II experience, his Korean and Vietnam military background. In 1951, he had a loss of faith, which did not return until 1988 when he received what can only be called biblical revelation that he could never have imagined or anticipated. His renewed faith created Random Thoughts of an Old Man in a Rocking Chair that became a collection of the successes, failures, observations, and homespun philosophy that gave meaning to both his successes and failures from a religious perspective, a perspective that made his life the marvelous adventure it has been. He is truly an individual who can say, "I have been there and done that."

The Left Hand of the Biblical God refers to the myths, customs, rituals, ceremonies, and sacrifices performed by religious organizations that are the shields that hide the true identity of both the benevolent Lord God and Jehovah, the vindictive God of Abraham. It is a saga of their genetic bloodlines, that of the Lord God through Adam and that of Jehovah through his son Isaac.

It is a realistic look at the civilized society of man before the flood and a critical critique of the recorded death, suffering, trials, and tribulations of the Jewish people after the flood.

The Left Hand of the Biblical God is a new and different perspective on the identity of the biblical gods and their relationship with man, an analysis of the Christian Bible, and the reality of organized religion. It is a perspective that will never be heard, preached from the pulpit, or taught in Sunday school.

At just nine years old, Lynette Charity stood frozen as her father struck her mother so hard she toppled over the porch railing into the hedges below. That night, Lynette made a vow: she would find a way out. Escape Plan is a raw and riveting memoir of grit, grief, and gratitude. Set in the segregated South of the early 1960s, it chronicles Lynette Charity’s remarkable journey from a turbulent childhood to achieving what once seemed impossible: becoming a physician—a Black woman doctor—at a time when such a thing was almost unimaginable. One month after that violent night, Lynette watched the debut episode of Ben Casey, a new medical drama. In that moment, her escape plan crystallized: she would become a doctor. But even as her real-life caregivers were Black and the ones on TV were White, the contradiction didn’t deter her. Determined to rise above the limitations placed on her, she forged her mother’s signature to transfer into a better-resourced white school across town. She graduated high school with honors, earned a full scholarship to Chatham College for Women in Pittsburgh, and later joined the Tufts University School of Medicine Class of 1978—one of just seven Black women in her class. Told with unflinching honesty and deep humanity, Escape Plan is a story of survival, ambition, and the power of a young girl’s dream to rewrite her destiny.

OMAS GITTINS HAS NEVER been one to follow the traditional art world playbook. The Manchester-based artist, known for his bold, expressive style, is stepping into the spotlight with his debut solo exhibition, Pursuit of Joy, at London’s Toxic Arts Gallery. The exhibition features over ten new works that explore the complexities of joy as a daily pursuit rather than a final destination. Gittins’ pieces are characterized by thick black outlines and vibrant color blocking, creating a visual language that balances controlled precision with chaotic expression. Beyond the canvas, Gittins is making waves in the fashion world. In collaboration with Salomon Sportstyle, the exhibition includes a custom pair of XT-6 sneakers adorned with his signature characters. These one-of-a-kind shoes will be raffled off to attendees on opening night. Additionally, the first 100 visitors will receive limited-edition t-shirts featuring Gittins’ artwork. Gittins’ approach to art is deeply personal. He describes his characters as reflections of internal feelings, stating, “Every character I make is a reflection of those feelings trapped inside. When I walk away from a canvas, I know a piece is done when I look at it and it’s looking back at me.” T

In London, United Kingdom, a spellbinding exhibition of Cartier jewels, many never seen before in public, is opening in London tracing the history of the luxury French design house beloved by the rich and famous, from Queen Elizabeth II to Rihanna. DAZZLING CARTIER

OR THE FIRST TIME IN THREE decades, the V&A museum is showing a retrospective of some of Cartier’s most iconic creations. Founded in Paris almost 180 years ago, the company has pioneered and modernised the luxury jewellery market. “We all think of Cartier as being this wonderful design epic and glamorous name, but it’s also because they are so good at creating something that is ahead of the times, but doesn’t go out of fashion,” said curator Helen Molesworth. Nearby is a tiara from 1902 set with 1,048 diamonds, worn to the queen’s coronation by Clementine Churchill, the wife of then Prime Minister Winston Churchill. It was lent to singer Rihanna when she was photographed for the cover of W magazine in 2016. The exhibition’s curators have brought together rare pieces from museums around the world, including from private collections such as items belonging to King Charles III and Monaco’s Prince Albert. One of the masterpieces on display is the breathtaking Williamson pink diamond rose brooch, made for Queen Elizabeth in 1953, the year of her

diamond rose brooch worn by the queen’s sister, Princess Margaret. “We wanted to showcase ... the legacy of Cartier over a hundred years,” said Molesworth. In one room, the curators have gathered a collection of 18 tiaras spanning from 1900 to the modern day — a grand finale to the dazzling display. The design house was founded in Paris in 1847 when Louis-François Cartier took over the workshop of his master. In 1898, his grandson Louis Cartier joined the brand and played a pivotal role in Cartier’s evolution. Then in 1902, his brother Pierre opened a branch in London. “We all think of Cartier as being this wonderful design epic and glamorous name, but it’s also because they are so good at creating something that is ahead of the times, but doesn’t go out of fashion,” -Helen Molesworth “We see very early on, even in the beginning of the 1900s, that Cartier is really looking around for inspiration,” said Molesworth. “We see inspirations from the Islamic world, from Egypt, from China, from India. The brothers ... travelled. They went to Russia, they went to India,” she added. Above all, they managed to capture the changing moods of the times in which they lived. After the stunning diamond necklaces of the Roaring Twenties came more sober gold bracelets designed in the 1960s. “One of the great successes of Cartier is staying ahead of the times, being the trendsetters, and realising that they are keeping up with the changing world around them,” the curator said.

During the war years, Cartier designed a brooch in 1942 of a caged bird to mark the Nazi occupation of France. Following France’s liberation, the design was changed in 1944. Called Free as a Bird, the brooch shows a chirping bird, bearing France’s distinctive red, white and blue colours, spreading its wings as it flies out of its cage. The exhibition also explores the long-standing ties between the French house and the British royal family, which date back to the early 1900s. In 1904, King Edward VII officially appointed Cartier as jewellers to the monarchy — a title it retains to this day. This includes the Halo Tiara ordered by Queen Elizabeth II’s father, George VI, for his wife, the late Queen Mother. Imbued with almost 800 diamonds, it was worn by Princess Margaret to the 1953 coronation of her sister Elizabeth, and later to hold the veil of Kate Middleton at her marriage to Prince William in 2011.

In the wake of World War II, one-third of East Germany, including East Prussia, was given to Poland and Russia with the consent of the four allies governing occupied Germany-America, England, France, and Russia. In the process, 14 million Germans who called that area home were driven from their land, receiving horrible treatment and never allowed to return. This is the story of one family’s journey to safety and the miracles of God that lined their path to deliverance. In Gone with the World Wars, Hildegard Bonacker Bruni shares the inspiring true account of her family’s incredible passage during and after World War II and the amazing faithfulness of God that protected them every step of the way. Hildegard shares the testimony of her parents, Gustav and Emilie Bonacker, who were born in East Prussia and lived through WWI and WWII. In July1944, Gustav was drafted into the army, and in August of the same year, Emilie, along with seven of her children, had to escape on horse and buggy for eight months until she reached the refuge of Sophienhof, in Schleswig Holstein. By the grace of God, Hildegard’s family survived, overcoming the life-threatening trials of hunger, sickness, freezing temperatures, and constant bomb attacks. Gone with the World Wars documents this brave family’s experiences, which are representative of many German families during the time, revealing what they lived through both during and after the war. With her family’s story as a reflection of what truly happened during World War II, Hildegard dedicated her life to uncovering the truth of both world wars, the historical background of each, and how the various types of government affected the lives of the German people, her family included. Young adults flock to London ‘offline’ nights THE OFFLINE REVIVAL

ONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – Lois Shafier dropped her mobile phone into a deposit box, happy in the knowledge that for the next two hours she would be completely offline—no pings, beeps, or distractions. “I’m bad at switching off. I have a proper addiction to my phone,” she told AFP, as she headed into an evening out organised by the Offline Club in London. Tickets were quickly snapped up for the two-hour “digital detox” night, with more than 150 young adults—mostly L

For her, the event was a chance to “get outside my bubble.” Inside the venue, a London church, tables were scattered with board games as a buzz of conversation filled the room. Engineer Harry Stead, 25, said surrendering his phone felt “freeing.” “I don’t realise the addiction, and too often I feel the urge to look at my phone

Who am I and why should you read my story? My name is Max Faraday. Nobody is going to believe me, but here I am putting it all down on paper. I am a man of two time periods. Forgive me, this sci-fi stuff is new to me.

A week or more ago, in July 2002, I came home for my 1982 high school class reunion. I was staying with my friend Jamie Scott and his family. On the way home from the reunion, we picked up his kids at the babysitter. Their little girl comes out and bounces a ball that tumbles out of her hands into the street. Just as we arrived, a car speeds up and my instincts take over. I pick her up and get her out of the way, but I was then hit by the speeding car! Stunned, I wake up in September 1978! I am a thirty-eight-year-old man in a fourteen-year-old's body! I can't tell anyone, or they would lock me up, thinking I'm crazy! I know I would.

So here I am in the eighth grade all over again. When I went to bed in 1978, I woke up in a coma in 2002, wondering about the driver who ran me over.

Can religious topics be entertaining ? Well Jesus said he was half man and half god. It's certainly an entertaining place to start. How much of Jesus as depicted in the Bible was accurate? How much was the apostle's Peter's creation ? How much were crafty editors who wrote about Jesus four hundred years after his passing with a purpose of establishing their own multilayered religious enterprise? My feelings on Jesus's success is tied to his credibility. He had to be approachable. Jesus is somewhat naive and vulnerable. His followers were drawn to that warmth of honesty. But Jesus is also fishing for followers. So there is a calculating methodology. He doesn't want to be "caught acting" as Spencer Tracy warned. Indeed, he had a high wire act that ended badly. Whether he was or wasn't the son of god, he did live. That fact has been keeping people entertained for thousand of years. "All roads lead to Rome" was how Christ's modest preaching of charity got legs to the world stage. Jesus never made it to Rome. But Jesus's once humble apostle, Peter, did make it to Rome. He became a quasi producer/promoter of Christ's message but with a political component. Peter went on to be Pope. He was the first and only Jew to be Pope of The Holy Roman Empire. He was followed in that position by powerful political members of Rome's ruling class families and subsequent Roman emperors. It started with the emperor Nero. The savvy Nero used Peter to manage the expectations of newly arriving religious followers of Jesus and other immigrants from the vast empire. Nero also had an eye on managing Rome's own restive poor who were a growing threat to his power. The message of Jesus had been expanded from personal charity to a state funded "Bread and Circus" political event akin to welfare. Once Nero became Peter's partner, Peter became redundant. Peter was then crucified. What is it about Jerusalem and the surrounding locale that produced both Jesus and Muhammad ? Maybe it was a coincidence. Or was it because Jesus and Muhammad replaced pagan gods? Pagan gods did not promote Jesus' charity which morphed with the Catholic Church into a welfare state. That's a compelling reason for common folks to follow the prophets and stop making out of pocket offerings to pagan god statues.

Polly was used to people coming and going at her house at all times of the night because her family ran an Underground Railroad station. Strangely, tonight there was more noise than usual, and Mother said noise was the enemy. That night in June 1857, Mother called urgently for Polly to get down to the secret room and bring water with her. When Polly was able to get the heavy sloshing bucket down the narrow stairs, she saw Mother kneeling by a young girl who was about Polly’s age. Her name was Hattie, and her forehead was beaded with sweat, and she was shaking uncontrollably.

Polly knew they would be friends with all the dangers and adventures that go with running the Underground Railroad.

ologna, often overshadowed by its flashier Italian siblings Rome, Venice, and Florence, is a city that rewards the curious traveler. Beyond its famed towers and

porticoes lies a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be discovered. Start your journey in the Quadrilatero district, where market stalls overflow with local delicacies— Parmigiano-Reggiano, prosciutto, handmade pasta. This is where the city’s culinary soul resides, untouched by time. Venture further, and you’ll find artisanal workshops tucked into narrow alleyways, their windows revealing skilled hands shaping leather, gold, and glass. Visit the Oratorio di Santa Cecilia, an unassuming chapel filled with Renaissance frescoes that rival those of Italy’s grandest churches. For a moment of serenity, climb the path to San Luca, where panoramic views stretch across the terracotta rooftops to the distant hills. For a taste of Bologna’s intellectual side, step into the Archiginnasio, once the seat of Europe’s oldest university. The historic anatomy theater, adorned with carved wooden figures, tells stories of centuries-old medical discoveries. In contrast, the MAMbo Museum showcases contemporary art, proving that Bologna’s creative spirit is ever-evolving. At sunset, seek out Osteria del Sole, a no-frills wine bar that has been serving locals since 1465. Bring your own food, order a glass of regional wine, and soak in the communal atmosphere. This is the essence of Bologna—unpretentious, welcoming, and rich in tradition. But Bologna’s hidden gems extend beyond the historic center. Just outside the city, the rolling hills of the Emilia-Romagna countryside reveal charming agriturismos, where farm-to-table dining takes on a whole new meaning. Vineyards producing rich, full-bodied Sangiovese and fizzy Lambrusco wines invite visitors for tastings that embody the region’s deep gastronomic roots. The culinary experience doesn’t stop there—venture into Bologna’s lesser-known trattorias, where you can find tortellini en brodo, a local delicacy served in steaming broth, or crescentine, crispy fried bread best enjoyed with local cheeses and cured meats. For history enthusiasts, the hidden canals of Bologna provide a fascinating glimpse into the city’s past. Once essential for trade and commerce, the canals are now mostly concealed beneath the streets. However, a secret viewpoint on Via Piella allows visitors to peek through a small window and see
