Irish oak, also known as sessile oak, is a long-lived species native to much of Europe and Western Asia and serves as the official national tree of Ireland. Celebrated for centuries, its leaves have been used in European symbols of strength and fidelity and even appear on historic military medals. Its acorns ripen each autumn providing an important food source for wildlife. Irish oak thrives in moist, fertile soils but also tolerates dry or clay conditions and shows better resistance to mildew than many related oaks. It has a moderate growth rate, typically slow in its first couple of decades before reaching about 8–12 inches of growth per year.
