The Shumard oak is a fast-growing tree native to the Southeastern United States, prized for its brilliant seasonal color. Its deeply lobed leaves emerge green in spring and turn vivid red, orange, and gold in fall. Egg-shaped acorns are an important food source for wildlife. Naturally a bottomland species, it tolerates short-term flooding and rich, moist soils, yet is highly adaptable to drought, pollution, compacted soils, and varied conditions. Well suited as a large shade or street tree, Shumard oak commonly lives over 100 years, with some specimens documented to reach nearly 480 years old.
