The cork oak is a distinctive tree best known for its thick, knobby bark which is the source of natural cork. Unique among trees, it can regenerate this outer bark, allowing it to be harvested sustainably without harming the tree. Cork production begins around age 25 and continues every 9–12 years for much of its life. A single tree can yield cork for 150–200 years. It has dark green, leathery leaves and small spring flowers that give way to acorns. Cork oak tolerates a range of soils, making it well suited to urban environments. Its resilience and renewable bark make it both an ecological asset and an economically valuable tree.
