Black locust, also called false acacia, is fast-growing and native to the Eastern United States but widely naturalized elsewhere. It is recognized by its zig-zag branches, deeply furrowed bark, fragrant white spring flowers, and flat, pea-like seed pods. Nitrogen-fixing roots enrich the soil, making it a pioneer species ideal for erosion control and restoration of disturbed areas. The wood is extremely hard and rot-resistant. Birds, squirrels, and pollinating insects are drawn to its flowers and seeds. Vigorous root suckers make this tree particularly aggressive at spreading, so it is best suited for managed landscapes.
