The coastal redwood is the world’s tallest tree. Though it can reach 365 feet in the wild, cultivated specimens typically grow much shorter and respond well to pruning. This long-lived tree can live 2,200 years or more in natural settings, though urban conditions dramatically shorten its lifespan. Coastal redwoods grow vigorously both upward and outward in girth until death, with death usually caused by external factors such as fire or wind rather than old age. Thriving with regular moisture and even lawn watering, redwoods’ rapid early growth makes them a rewarding choice for establishing a majestic and resilient natural setting.
