Japanese snowbell is native to East Asia. It blooms for several weeks in May to June producing delicate, white, bell-shaped flowers. Flowers are followed by small, olive-like fruit that can persist into fall. As it matures, the tree develops attractive orange-brown fissured bark, adding winter interest. The Japanese snowbell provides light, dappled shade, making it ideal for patios or garden areas. Seedlings may volunteer, therefore care should be taken to prevent unwanted naturalization. Its strong, fine- grained wood has traditionally been used for umbrella ribs, walking sticks, and small crafted items.
