The bald cypress is both resilient and beautiful. Native to the wetlands and river valleys of the Southeastern United States, it thrives in everything from flooded swamps to upland soils. Its soft, feathery foliage emerges chartreuse in spring, deepens to mossy green in summer, and turns a brilliant bronzed orange in fall, often lasting weeks longer than most trees. Exceptionally tough, it withstands wind, ice, drought, and cold to -20°F. When planted near water, it may form its signature “knees” which are cone-shaped roots that rise from the surface to help provide stability and facilitate oxygen exchange in waterlogged soils.
