American elm is native to Northeastern America. Renowned for its classic vase-shaped form, it creates a high, arching canopy. Once established, it grows at a medium to fast rate, typically 1–3 feet per year, making it an excellent shade tree. Though not native to Oregon, American elm was introduced there in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with notable examples including one planted in Portland in 1870. Historically a defining street tree in many U.S. cities, it was heavily impacted by Dutch elm disease. Today, disease-resistant cultivars and hybrids allow this iconic tree to thrive once again in urban landscapes.
