The Chinese, or lacebark elm, is a hardy, fast-growing tree native to East Asia. It has distinctive exfoliating bark that flakes in a mosaic of gray, green, brown, and orange. Highly tolerant of urban conditions, it thrives in streetscapes, parks, and residential landscapes, and its resistance to Dutch elm disease makes it a reliable alternative to other elms. Small clusters of flowers appear in late summer, followed by fruit that persists into winter. In warm climates, Chinese elm can remain semi-evergreen. Its broad canopy provides excellent shade and structure, making it a versatile and beautiful addition to a variety of settings.
