Chitalpa is a hybrid of desert willow and southern catalpa, combining their traits into a tree known for its long midsummer to early fall flowering period and trumpet-shaped blooms. Most plants sold are the cultivars ‘Pink Dawn,’ with light pink flowers and a broader form, or ‘Morning Cloud,’ which has very pale pink to white blooms and a more upright form, both do not produce seed pods. The tree has an open branching pattern that casts a light shade making it easy to garden under. It handles dry conditions once established, though flowering improves with occasional watering during summer.
