The leather oak is a small, slow-growing, and drought-tolerant oak. Endemic to California, it is primarily found on nutrient-poor serpentine soils. Named for its thick, leathery leaves with deep green tops, rolled edges, and a golden, velvety underside. Adaptable to dry, rocky soils as well as clay, leather oak requires little summer water once established. Its slow growth and compact form also make it ideal for bonsai or other sculptural plantings. Beyond its ornamental value, leather oak is a keystone species, supporting a variety of wildlife and adding ecological value to urban and natural plantings alike.
