Tanoak is a distinctive evergreen hardwood native to the West Coast from Southwest Oregon to Southern California. Though it produces acorns, it is not a true oak but a member of the beech family, sharing traits with both oaks and chestnuts. In forests it grows tall and straight, while in open settings it develops broad crowns with sweeping branches. Its dense foliage shelters birds and mammals, and its acorns feed wildlife including Steller’s jays, band-tailed pigeons, and acorn woodpeckers. Slow-growing yet long-lived, tanoak can endure for centuries, bringing both ecological value and lasting beauty.
