The coast live oak is a long-lived species native to the coastal regions of California down to Baja California, Mexico. It can live for centuries, often surpassing 250 years. Each spring, the tree produces blooms, followed by acorns that provide an essential food source for over 270 species in its native habitat. Its distinctive evergreen foliage gives the live oak its name, as it retains living leaves year-round while continually adding new growth and shedding older leaves gradually. Historically, its strong, durable wood was valued for shipbuilding and wagon wheels, highlighting both its cultural and ecological significance.
