Blue oak is a drought-tolerant tree endemic to California, primarily growing in the foothills surrounding the Great Central Valley. First noted by Scottish biologist David Douglas in 1831, it’s named for its distinctive blue-green leaves and renowned for its resilience in dry landscapes. This species provides essential food and shelter for wildlife. Blue oaks have deep roots and may drop leaves mid-summer during dry years to conserve water, a key adaptation to drought. The blue oak is both a beautiful specimen and a vital component of California’s ecosystems, making it the state’s champion drought-tolerant oak.
