Once widespread, Oregon white oak woodlands and savannas support exceptional biodiversity and are carefully managed by Indigenous peoples using fire. More than 300 native plants and wildlife species are associated with Oregon white oak ecosystems, many found nowhere else. Today, oak savannah habitats are highly endangered, placing hundreds of associated plant and wildlife species at risk. Conserving and planting Oregon white oak, even a few trees in a neighborhood, can play a meaningful role in restoring this highly degraded and ecologically vital ecosystem.
