Gray oak, also called shin oak or scrub oak, is a resilient oak native to Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. In its dry, natural habitat, it often grows as a shrub, while in areas with sufficient moisture it’s more likely to develop into a tree. Its leathery, oval leaves are muted blue-green, giving the tree its characteristic grayish tone, and sometimes turn soft crimson in fall. It is semi-evergreen or drought-deciduous, keeping its leathery leaves through mild, wet winters but shedding them during hot, dry periods. In wetter regions or with supplemental irrigation, it can remain evergreen year-round.
