Oregon myrtle, also known as California bay or California-laurel, is a strongly aromatic tree with leathery leaves that release a distinctive scent when crushed. The foliage, twigs, and flowers all carry this fragrance, and while many people enjoy it, the oils can cause skin irritation, sneezing, or headaches for some. In fall it produces olive-shaped berries that deepen to a dark plum color and reddish bark that peels on older stems. Birds and small mammals frequently use the tree for food and shelter. The leaves have a long history of practical uses, from seasoning food to repelling pests.
