The single-leaf pinyon is a small pine native to California’s high deserts and mountains. It is the world’s only pine with single needles rather than bundles, making it truly unique. The tree has thick, gray-green needles and a rounded form. Exceptionally drought-tolerant and adapted to poor, well-drained soils, it thrives in hot, dry conditions where few other trees succeed. Slow-growing but consistent, typically less than a foot per year, individual trees can live for over 900 years in optimal conditions. After about 15 years, it may produce cones filled with large, tasty pine nuts, a vital food source for humans, birds, and wildlife.
