The giant sequoia, the world’s largest tree by volume, is endemic to the western slopes of California’s Sierra Nevada. These iconic trees form isolated “islands in the sky” within forests. Among the oldest living organisms on Earth, some giant sequoias are estimated to be 4,000 years old. Like other sequoias, they can absorb water directly through their needles, a process called foliar uptake. Their wide-spreading branches provide winter shelter for wildlife, and birds and squirrels feed on seeds from the rounded cones. Thriving in deep soil with ample water, giant sequoias can grow up to 4 feet per year.
