The western redcedar is a majestic conifer, dominant in British Columbia and Alaska, extending into Northern California. Known for its valuable wood, used by Northwest Coastal Indians to carve totem poles and build lodges, it is also an excellent riparian habitat tree, providing shelter and resources for wildlife. With an average growth rate of 12–24 inches per year, it develops slender, drooping branchlets adorned with dark green, scale-like leaves that form flat, lacy sprays. Western redcedars thrive in deep, moist, well-drained soil and benefit from partial shade in hot, interior valleys, especially when young.
