Black tupelo, also known as sour gum, is a stately tree admired for its brilliant fall color and wildlife value. It has a straight trunk and rounded crown, with glossy dark green summer leaves that turn vivid shades of yellow, orange, red, and purple in autumn. Small greenish-white spring flowers attract bees and give way to dark blue fruits favored by birds and mammals. Though slow- growing, it develops striking, furrowed bark reminiscent of alligator hide as it matures. Preferring moist, well-drained soils, it thrives in both lowlands and uplands and is prized as one of the best trees for fall color and pollinator support.
