Pinyon pine is a small, rounded evergreen native to the American Southwest, valued for both its beauty and its nutrient-rich seeds. Its curved needles, ranging from deep green to soft blue-gray, make it a striking choice for rock gardens and dryland plantings. The cones produce prized pine nuts that have nourished Native American communities for centuries and remain a cherished food today. Wildlife such as jays, squirrels, and chipmunks also feast on the seeds, helping new trees to spread. Slow-growing but highly drought tolerant, pinyon pines are both ornamental and ecologically important.
