The ‘Oregon Green’ pine, also known as ‘Oregon Jade’ or ‘Select Green,’ is a dwarf cultivar of the Austrian pine ( P. nigra ) discovered as a seedling in Boring, Oregon, in the early 1990s. Prized for its dark-green needles and asymmetrical form, it grows slowly adding 6-12 inches per year. In spring, clusters of white new growth shoots, called “candles,” emerge at the branch tips, adding visual interest. Highly adaptable and resilient, ‘Oregon Green’ tolerates coastal exposure, urban pollution, drought, and browsing from deer. Its sculptural form and low-maintenance, waterwise nature lend a subtle Japanese-inspired elegance.
