Gray pine is endemic to California, meaning its natural growth is restricted primarily in the dry foothills around the Central Valley and other interior ranges. It is an excellent choice for low-water landscapes or areas with poor soil. Known for its football-sized cones, gray pine grows quickly when young, especially during its first 10 years. Mature trees develop an open, lacy canopy that cast light shade, earning it the nickname “see-through pine.” Pruning the lower branches allows for gardening or other uses beneath. It produces large, edible seeds that are less favored than those of other pines due to a slightly resinous taste.
