The London plane tree is a hybrid of the American sycamore ( P. occidentalis ) and oriental plane ( P. orientalis ). Its patchy brown bark peels away to reveal white and olive tones, while broad, maple-like leaves turn yellow in the fall. Round, fuzzy seed balls, produced in pairs, often persist into winter. The tree develops a strong, wide, and deep root system, with aggressive surface roots that can lift sidewalks and pipes. It is, however, tolerant of root pruning and will remain vigorous and healthy. This means that with proper root management, the London plane is an excellent choice despite its potential for structural interference.
