The Douglas-fir is one of the tallest trees in the world and a cornerstone of Pacific Northwest forests. It is a vital timber species in the United States, the official state tree of Oregon, and often celebrated as a classic Christmas tree. Despite its name, it is not a true fir but a close relative of hemlocks, reflected in its scientific name, Pseudotsuga , meaning “false hemlock.” It is renowned for its incredible height, often exceeding 300 feet in the wild, and distinctive “mouse-tailed” cones with three-pronged bracts. Its soft, fragrant needles and flexible branches invite touch.
