The scarlet oak is a fast-growing tree native to the Eastern United States. It is prized for its brilliant, deep red fall foliage, widely considered the most striking of all oaks. This oak produces small acorns with large mast crops every 3–5 years that serve as a vital food source for wildlife. Mature trees are also identifiable by distinctive smooth, light-colored vertical streaks, known as “ski trails,” on the bark above head height, helping to distinguish them from similar species like pin oak ( Q. palustris ). Scarlet oak is exceptionally drought-tolerant thanks to its deep taproot and offers a spectacular autumn display.
