Pin oak, also called swamp oak or swamp Spanish oak, features a distinctive slender form. Its Latin name, palustris , meaning "of the marsh," reflects its tolerance for wet soils. Young trees often show marcescence, retaining dry leaves through winter, a trait shared with only a few other oaks. Fast-growing initially, pin oak adds 24 inches or more per year, slowing with maturity. It has a shallow, fibrous root system with extensive lateral roots, making it easy to transplant but prone to surface interference. Unlike many long-lived oaks, is has a short life-span typically under 100 years, though some individuals live longer.
