Bur oak, also called mossycup oak, is a long-lived tree native to Eastern and Central North America, including Montana, the only oak species native to that state. Valued for its stately presence, it can live up to 300 years or more and It typically grows 1–2 feet per year. It provides dense shade while tolerating urban conditions such as pollution and heat stress. Its massive acorns, the largest of any North American oak, are enclosed in distinctive fringed cups, giving the tree its common name. Fall color is a subtle yellow-brown, but its impressive size, longevity, and ecological benefits make it a treasured landscape tree.
