Chestnut oak, also known as basket oak, rock oak, or rock chestnut oak, is a hardy tree native to Eastern North America. Often found on ridges and slopes, it is a defining species of Appalachian forests. Distinguished by its deeply furrowed bark and large, chestnut-shaped leaves, this oak is exceptionally adapted to dry, rocky soils where few other trees can thrive. It produces acorns that mature in a single growing season, making it a reliable food source for wildlife. Its mature bark retains characteristic gray tones, while its latin name, montana , reflects its mountainous habitat.
