Chinkapin oak is native to Central and Eastern North America. It features glossy, chestnut-like leaves with coarse teeth and produces sweet acorns that are highly prized by wildlife. The pale gray bark becomes rough and scaly with age. Chinkapin oak tolerates drought and alkaline conditions better than most oaks. It grows at a slow to moderate rate, typically 1–2 feet per year, and is slow to bear its first acorns, sometimes taking decades, but rewards patience with dependable growth and long life. For reliable acorn production, it benefits from having another oak or chinkapin oak nearby for cross-pollination.
