“What’s most important to me is not centering myself too heavily within the work. While the pieces are rooted in my experience and discovery, I try to keep the figures and silhouettes simple and restrained.” “I hope viewers leave the exhibition thinking more deeply about the spaces they move through and the people who built them—empathy to those people,” said Astete. For the artist, the connection between the act of etching, cutting, and assembling materials with the themes of migration and identity are not only rooted in intention, but support one another. Mariana Astete | Reensamblaje Astete’s process began with trying to understand her own story. Through education and her process creating, conceptual frameworks have evolved. As she makes her art, she reconstructs stories, representing the broader histories of the world. “As someone who migrated from Chile to the United States, I found myself constantly negotiating identity, language, labor, and belonging,” said Astete. “Printmaking became a way to physically dismantle and reconstruct those experiences.” Inspiration for Astete comes from everyday environments, workers, bulletin boards, waiting rooms— any space that may appear ordinary, but carries with them systems of power and hierarchy. “ Reensamblaje centers on migration, printmaking, drawing, and cultural reassembly,” explained Astete. “The show includes large-scale prints where small figures inhabit oversized environments…spaces that feel institutional and constructed.” Reensamblaje is not just a title, it’s a condition, Astete clarifies. Living between languages, systems, and structures while finding a way to reconstruct yourself is what it’s about.

is designed to identify structural gaps and help owners systematically increase the value of their business.

Enterprise Value Enhancement begins with structured data intake and rigorous analysis. Andrew Hembd | Dial Tone: Trouble with the Connection Hembd looks to technology of the 1980s and ‘90s as it relates to today’s tech landscape when creating. He ties in themes related to society’s attachment to social media and is informed by the role consumerism has played for the last five decades. Hembd uses various mediums to communicate through including papier-mâché, screen printing, stop motion animation, and his favorite, acrylic paint. He also incorporates analog devices, displaying them alongside various pieces. “My art has evolved organically over my time in grad school,” added Hembd. “I had recently lost a pet I was very close to, so that became a theme right away.” His upcoming thesis exhibition installation, Dial Tone: Trouble with the Connection , critiques and explores the impact of consumerism and nostalgia “through an immersive, multi-room experience on our sense of identity and human connection.” “This work is about the growing disconnect in a society where digital interactions increasingly replace physical and emotional ones,” elaborated Hembd. “The superficial connections fostered by our devices are contributing to a mental health crisis marked by isolation, aggression, and misinformation.” Five distinct rooms will be constructed to evoke specific themes Hembd explores in his work, each one representing something different. Room themes include nostalgia and identity, the evolution of technology, social media and perception, branding and consumer culture, and finally, grief and disconnection. “Woven throughout the exhibition are intimate pieces centered on the loss of my late dog. By using this personal narrative, the work is given a relatable human experience about loss, as death is a part of living,” described Hembd. “It’s symbolizing the deep genuine connections that are sometimes lost amid a hyper- connected, but emotionally distant world.” “Now that I’ve had time to find out what's important to me, I believe in being true to yourself and your creative process. Making art because you need to make it and not making it solely to please others.”

She practiced both realism and abstract painting. “Realism helped me understand structure, proportion, and discipline. But deep inside, I always felt more connected to abstraction,” revealed Nishe. “I was drawn to color, emotion, and the freedom it allowed.” Nishe explores more than just color and gesture. While working with acrylic paint, foam and wood board, and forms of mixed media, she plays with sculptural form and how to cut, build, layer and reshape materials incorporated in her work. “When I came to the United States and began my MFA at USD, something shifted,” said Nishe. “I started to question the flat canvas and the traditional rectangle.” Emotion, memory, and cultural transition inform her process as she connects those themes to tension, balance, and growth, using unique shapes to communicate her art. “Moving from Bangladesh to the United States changed how I see space and structure,” added Nishe. “I create to understand that shift.” Nishe’s upcoming MFA exhibition focuses on surface as structure while incorporating bold color, edges, and textured surfaces. The relationship between intuition and structure is essential for Nishe. The honest act of creating has allowed her to eloquently respond to material, rather than forcing an image to surface. Her work transmits the dependence interior composition and physical structure have on one another. “My style is abstract, layered, and dimensional—it feels energetic, but also reflective,” said Nishe. “The work balances tension and softness.”

“A major turning point was when I stopped protecting my paintings and allowed risk. Letting accidents stay changed my confidence as an artist.”

Mentorship at USD To aid in their artistic development, each student is assigned a faculty advisor, helping mentor them through their schooling. “Making art is like magic,” said USD department of art student advisor and associate professor Amber Hansen . ”You can make visible things you imagine, and you can help shape the world you want to live in.” Hansen, specializing in painting, describes the creative, collaborative process as a way in which to dream of something bigger than ourselves, opening doors of opportunity, while uplifting and amplifying moments of leadership and contribution. When we connect creative acts with people we care about, there's a powerful, worthwhile language passed through one person to many, which helps build the fabric of the community we live in, Hansen adds. USD department of art advisor and assistant professor Erin Wohletz , specializes in printmaking. “If being a printmaker has taught me anything, it is the importance of community,” said Wohletz. “Every printshop I have ever worked in has been a community of artists who are constantly sharing their knowledge with their peers.”

Wohletz says each student identifies specific goals and unique subject matters they aim to showcase within their art practice. “My priority is to help students communicate their unique thoughts and skills as clearly as they can through their art, verbally, and through writing,” added Wohletz. Wohletz’s favorite moments in teaching consist of the electric times when students are genuinely surprised by what they’re able to accomplish. “Their excitement, hard work, and energy in the art building is infectious and inspires me in my own artistic research,” revealed Wohletz. For Astete, Nishe, and Hembd alike, their time at USD has shown how important mentorship and communal engagement is, while describing it as an essential part of artistic development. “When you put your work forward in an environment where faculty are actively practicing artists, the standard shifts,” added Astete. Reptile Gardens opened back up on February 28 after a devastating fire rocked not only the popular long-time Rapid City attraction, but the entire state of South Dakota. “The fire was absolutely heartbreaking for our staff,” said president and CEO Joe Maierhauser . “They had invested years in raising and caring for some of those animals. They knew them all as individuals and loved them.” A fire was first reported around 1:30 a.m. on November 21 at a detached agricultural shelter. Investigators dubbed the cause as "undetermined electrical,” and 80-90 of African spur- thighed and red-footed tortoises and American Alligators were lost.

Orville , a 120-year-old tortoise was unharmed, along with a few other “gentle giants,” Tank , Samson , and their younger cousins Kenny , Peabody , and Hugo as they were in separate buildings. Maierhauser says the outpouring of love and concern after the fire was overwhelming. “We heard from people all over the United States and the world,” he said. “We received kind gift boxes from other zoos. Many offered to help in any way they could.”

The locals were the most “amazing.”

“We always knew people were fond of Reptile Gardens, but maybe had not realized how much people in this area saw us as part of their family and their family's lives,” said Maierhauser.

After a major period of “feeling numb and sad,” the team had to plan for what was to come. The staff reached out to other zoos and breeders to find new additions so visitors could have the same experiences as before. As one of the largest reptile zoos in the world, Reptile Gardens isn’t foreign to pivoting and looking ahead. What started out as one small building by Earl Brockelsby and some friends on a $400 loan from the bank in 1937 had turned into a campus of experiencing and preserving nature. “During the early years he would capture local snakes to exhibit each spring then release them in the fall,” said Maierhauser. “Each year he added and improved.” In 1949 Brockelsby added a full Reptile House , which enabled the team to keep more exotic species from around the world. They continued to improve and grow until 1965 when they moved to their new location, which ended up being off Highway 16 with four bustling lanes, bringing in visitors internationally.

The most “iconic” building of Reptile Gardens is the Sky Dome —two levels showcasing everything from one of the largest collections of reptiles anywhere, their collection of venomous and non-venomous snakes, amphibians, “big bugs,” sculptures from Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, and the Safari Room . “The Sky Dome was Earl’s idea, and at the time was the first major indoor jungle in the country,” said Maierhauser. “We tried a fascinating number of animal and bird species there. Some worked, some did not. It remains the centerpiece of the park.” For those who aren’t particularly fond of snakes and lizards, many exhibits in the Sky Dome also include fossils and minerals. The Dome has an exact cast of an Archelon Turtle Fossil —the largest turtle ever found (the actual fossil was discovered by paleontologists a short distance from Reptile Gardens in the 1970s, but was sold by Brockelsby to a museum in Vienna, Austria). “ALL GUESTS RECEIVE A COMPLIMENTARY SEASON PASS WITH THEIR ADMISSION SO YOU CAN RETURN AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT OVER THE SEASON—A GREAT OPTION FOR LOCALS!” Joe Maierhauser

Visit Prairie Dog Town Become one of South Dakota’s best-known creatures and get down to prairie dog level in the underground bubble to watch them frolic and play. • Did you know prairie dogs can run up to 35 miles per hour for short distances? • Did you know they recognize each other by touching their front teeth together; also known as a "kiss?" • Did you know the “dog” part of their name comes from the barking sounds they make? They have distinct, different sounds for specific predators.

While reptiles are a highlight for kids, the Safari Room is a favorite of adults with a veritable oasis filled with orchids, bromeliads, caladiums, and other tropical plants from locations like Central America, South America, Africa, and China. “Not long ago we went beyond what we had always done with flowers and plants and became a full botanical garden that dazzles our guests each year,” said Maierhauser. The entire grounds also has gorgeous walking gardens and Tortuga Falls with a waterfall and turtle and koi pond. Reptile Gardens has two year- round horticulturalists with 10 during the busy season.

“Our team will put 40,000 flowering plants in the ground this spring,” said Maierhauser. “The head horticulturists spend several months each fall and winter planning designs and plants for each flowerbed. During the main part of the season our grounds are lush and beautiful.” The main event for families typically includes various shows. There are a few to choose from, like Spring and Fall Bird Shows , Virtual Reality Adventures , Snake Shows , and the Gators . The other is the beloved giant tortoises. “On an almost daily basis we have people visit us who tell us when they were little they were here and had their photo taken with the giant tortoises, and now they are bringing their kids or grandkids to make the same memories,” said Maierhauser.

Because of the fire, the crew is working with a contractor and design team to create new housing for all of the tortoises, including the giants. “Our giant tortoises have long been

our guests’ favorite thing at Reptile Gardens,” said Maierhauser. “This new facility will not only be great for our animal residents, but will also enable our guests to have the same kind of great memory-making experiences with our tortoises in the shoulder seasons that they have during the summer.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT REPTILEGARDENS.COM+

Courthouse Museum

“You might not remember much about specific days when you went to school, but you will probably remember everything about taking a field trip to a museum,” said Siouxland Heritage Museums marketing coordinator Adam Nelson . The Old Courthouse Museum has been preserving and presenting the history of Minnehaha County since 1974 with unique displays. The newest exhibit, It’s About Time , premieres on April 16 with a reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The theme is—as you may have guessed—about time itself, as our daily lives depend on it.

“What time should we meet? What time is the party? What time do we have to be there? All these questions are centered around time, but how do we make sure we’re on time,” asked Nelson. Timekeeping devices have been around for 3,000 years, and clocks have been around for about 700 of those years. Early clocks were useful, but inaccurate, and Nelson says sometimes they could be off by nearly an hour. Now clocks are capable of being accurate down to hundredths of a second. The exhibit explores how clocks have changed. What were some of the most popular American clockmaker brands? When did people start using pocket watches and wristwatches? Visitors can find the answers to these questions and more in It’s About Time . It’s relatable themes that Nelson says museum-goers are drawn to. “Generally the most popular exhibits are the ones that people can relate to their past, especially growing up,” said Nelson. “I think one of the most popular ones I remember was Cruisin’ Cuisine: Drive-ins of Sioux Falls . Everyone who lived that era had stories and memories of drive-in restaurants.”

Other current exhibits include An Indigenous America (Native American artifacts), Cooking Up History (ever- changing technology and the evolvement of the cookbook in the kitchen), School Spirit (a history of forms of school pride), Parades, Picnics, & Pageants: South Dakota Celebrates , and The Courthouse Chronicles: From County Administration to Museum . commemorating the 250th anniversary (or semiquincentennial) of America. “Communities throughout America are planning large, patriotic celebrations in anticipation of this milestone on July 4,” said Nelson. “This exhibit looks at the many ways people have celebrated these past anniversaries. Perhaps you remember or attended some of these celebrations!” The Courthouse Chronicles : From County Administration to Museum also has reason to celebrate with the 50th anniversary Parades, Picnics, & Pageants : South Dakota Celebrates is one of many ways attractions and events are of the Siouxland Heritage Museums (the Old Courthouse Museum, the Pettigrew Home & Museum , and the Irene Hall Museum Resource Center ) in 2024. The exhibit examines the history of the original Minnehaha County Courthouse. Divided into three parts, The Courthouse Chronicles looks at how the courthouse has changed over the years: its construction, its decades as a courthouse, and how it became a museum.

“In October 1890, Minnehaha County employees began moving into the newly-constructed Minnehaha County Courthouse,” described Nelson. “The building served as the county courthouse for the next 72 years. After a new county courthouse opened in 1962, the original courthouse sat mostly empty.” The 1970s brought workers, researchers, and restoration specialists to kick off the building’s new life as a museum. Each exhibit over the last 52 years is brought to life by the staff. Nelson says team members research topics of interest on their own in addition to their regular job duties. “Once the exhibit script is researched and written, the exhibits staff comes up with a design that we build in-house with panels, cases, platforms, mounts, and interactives,” he explained. “The collections staff handles all of the artifacts that are included in each exhibit and make sure they are handled safely and won’t be damaged while on exhibit for 18- 24 months.” Volunteers are included in most projects every step of the way as well. The Siouxland Heritage Museums are primarily funded by the City of Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County, along with support from their membership group, The Siouxland Heritage Museums Alliance .
