CWU Board of Trustees Meeting Agenda | Feb 2025

Central Washington University Board of Trustees February 21, 2025 Action – Approval of re-naming of the Wellington Event Center

Rob Moehring is a 1969 psychology graduate of CWU. Valerie Moehring is a 1969 Art Education graduate of CWU. Three generations of the Moehring family are CWU graduates. Rob is currently chairman of Washington Shoe Company, a family-owned business that began in 1891 as Seattle’s first shoe company. The Moehring family has owned the business since 1911. Rob joined the company in 1974 and together he and Valerie took the firm to new heights. Rob acquired the company in 1990. Washington Shoe Company is a successful regional business and outstanding corporate citizen, reflecting Rob’s decades long leadership of the company. Washington Shoe was named the Puget Sound Journal’s Family Business of the Year in 2024. In addition, Rob and Valerie’s son Mark Moehring (CWU economics ’92) is president of Washington Shoe’s “Wear a Big Smile Foundation”, which provides footwear to those in need. Rob and Valerie have very fond memories of their time at CWU and have stated that CWU meant the world to them. Donors to CWU since 1998, Rob recently made a $2M pledge to the CWU Foundation to create a Presidential Fund for Innovation. These funds, most of which will create one or more endowments, will allow the CWU President to invest in new strategic priority initiatives. In recognition of this pledge to create a Presidential Innovation Fund and in recognition of this philanthropic leadership supporting future generations of CWU students, we recommend the following motion: The Board of Trustees of Central Washington University hereby approves the re-naming of the Wellington Event Center as the Rob and Valerie Moehring Event Center. Submitted: Approved for Submittal to the Board:
