Jacksonville Beach, FL Sunshine Playground • 2022 Contractor Build • Budget: $1.6m • Size: 18,000 sq ft • Surfacing: Turf
• Material: Recycled Plastic / Steel • Shaded swings and Sail Shades
Sunshine playground was built in the mid 90's by volunteers and for decades, the playground supported the hard play it was built for. In the Spring of 2022, Play By Design was awarded the contract to rebuild the iconic Playground following a competitive bid process. During the design development phase, we collected the community's hopes, dreams, and needs to create a playground that exceeded ADA guidelines, would thrive in a coastal climate with little maintenance, and included local history in fun and innovative ways! As this was a contractor build orchestrated by our CPSI-certified staff, much of the playground was pre-built in our facilities and installed on-site over two phases.
Labeled Plan View
The design was finalized and ready for production in late summer of 2021 after careful consideration of
input from city stakeholders, occupational and physical therapists, and community
feedback. The addition of shade completed the playground design.
Custom Play Components
History By Design
The Jax Beach water tower can be seen for miles and stands as an iconic landmark for those who live and visit the area. It was, therefore, an element of the local environment that we wanted to incorporate into the design. We replicated the tower using steel and plastic and then installed a custom climbing net on the inside. You can even sit at the very top and peer out!
History By Design
The Red Cross tower in Jax Beach was built in 1947 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Known for many years for its partnership with the Red Cross and events such as the lifeguard marathon, we wanted to design a structure with a “lookout Area,” a red cross, and fast slides to mirror the speed of lifeguards running into the water.
Component Highlights
Design Development
Our design team prioritizes safety while creating play environments with opportunities for all ages and abilities, as well as appropriate challenge, excitement, and visual appeal. The Sunshine Playground design incorporates innovative equipment from multiple vendors so that we could exceed ADA guidelines. We also wanted to include unique custom architecture, such as the water tower climbing net and the lifeguard tower & slides. In and around the design are “Easter Eggs,” or discoverable activities for children to find.
