READING POWER 20 MIN Word-Reading Skills in Action Campers will play a game to apply the skill reviewed in the previous lesson. Consonant - le Syllable Match Objective Campers will match words with the same consonant -le syllable. Get Ready to Play Print and cut out sets of 30 Word Cards, one set for each group of players. Sort each set into two decks, the 15 A-cards and the 15 B-cards. Divide players into pairs. Give each pair a set of Word Cards (A and B decks). Goal Match two words with the same consonant -le syllable. How to Play the Game 1. Have players separately shuffle their A Cards and B Cards, then place each deck face down in three rows of five cards. 2. Players take turns turning over a card from each deck, reading the words, and determining whether they have the same consonant -le syllable. 3. If the player makes a match, the player says the words aloud and keeps the two cards. If the words are not a match, the player turns the cards back over. 4. Players continue taking turns until all words have been matched. The player with more pairs of cards is the winner.
BRING THE TEXT TO LIFE 20 MIN Readers’ Theater Divide campers into pairs or small groups. Make sure they have their notebooks open to the decodable passage from the previous lesson, or to the selected book passage. Read the passage aloud, then have campers read it together several times until they understand what is happening in the text and can interpret and perform the scene. Give campers about five minutes to choose their roles and practice the scene, then a few minutes to act it out.
MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Revisit the passage before asking campers to read. Have campers use gestures as they read to illustrate long and tall rectangles. Remind campers to change their tone for exclamation points and words that describe feelings or volume like happy and quiet. Being mindful of the meaning of the words as they read will aid in comprehension.
