WRITING POWER 25 MIN
Respond to Reading Have campers open their notebooks to the webs that they used in the previous lesson. Explain that they will use the details they found to help them write about color in an imaginative way. Remind them that personification is a type of figurative language that gives human characteristics to nonhuman things. Model Campers, in Eye for Color , we read that when Albers combined colors in different ways, it changed the way the colors “behaved.” What did you notice about the way the author described the colors?
MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Have campers revisit the book and look at the illustrations showing many color combinations. Ask what they notice. Guide them to think of adjectives to describe the color combinations. Have them use one “feeling” word in their sentences.
Pause for campers to refer to their webs and share their thinking with the group. The author used figurative language, including personification, to describe how certain color combinations behaved, such as dancing, or stepping forward or back. Today, we’re going to write about color in an imaginative way. Explain that campers will choose a color and use their own words to describe something the color does. Encourage them to use personification. Write the following prompt and
sentence frames on the board: Choose a color. How does it act?
The color I chose is ________________________. It makes me feel ___________________________.
Practice Have campers describe the color they chose to a partner. Remind them to describe something the color does using figurative language. Then, have them write their own sentences or complete the sentence frames in their notebooks. Clarify Remind campers that figurative language, like the language that the author uses in this book, can help the reader see things in a new way. CLOSING CAMPFIRE 15 MIN Reflection Question Have partners turn knee-to-knee and discuss this question. Today, we talked about how curiosity led Josef Albers to discover new ways of looking at color. How can being curious lead you to discover new things? Praise and Affirmation Offer concrete praise and affirmation for campers’ efforts and accomplishments today. Shooting Stars Dance With the group, throw shooting stars (pretend to throw a basketball into a hoop). Campers can do a dance with the praise or put it in their pockets.
