WRITING POWER 25 MIN
Respond to Reading Make sure campers have their copies of Roadrunner’s Dance and their notebooks open to the graphic organizer for this lesson. Campers will revisit the book and pay close attention to the gifts that were given to Roadrunner and how each gift helped him.
MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Read each sentence from the story that refers to a gift that the animals give to Roadrunner. Ask campers to draw a picture to show each gift. Help campers label their pictures (i.e., branches, tail feathers, wing feathers, reed, and stones) .
Draw a chart on the board or on chart paper. (Refer to the graphic organizer for this lesson in the Graphic Organizers section.) As you guide campers to find details in the book, model filling in your chart while campers fill in their own. Model Desert Woman created a new animal to guard the road from the snake. What gifts did each animal give to Roadrunner? Let’s look back in the book. Read aloud the first two paragraphs on page 13, which begin “He needs slender legs . . .” Then say: Deer gave branches from a bush. Record the information in your chart while campers write in their notebooks. Then ask: How did the branches help? Give campers time to talk and share their thinking and add this detail to the second column of the chart. Continue to read and ask campers to identify the gifts that Raven and Eagle gave, and how each gift helped Roadrunner. Add these details to your chart. Practice Have campers work with partners to finish filling in the charts in their notebooks. Say: We looked at all the gifts that the animals provided. What gifts did Heron, Coyote, and Desert Woman give? Work with a partner to find the gifts and how they helped. Clarify Remind campers that in the next lesson, they will use the details they gathered to help them write an opinion sentence about which gift was most helpful. CLOSING CAMPFIRE 15 MIN Reflection Question Have partners turn knee-to-knee and discuss this question. Today, we saw that at the end of the story, Roadrunner felt confident. He knew what to do when he saw Rattlesnake. How does confidence help you face a challenge? Praise and Affirmation Offer concrete praise and affirmation for campers’ efforts and accomplishments today. Shooting Stars Dance With the group, throw shooting stars (pretend to throw a basketball into a hoop). Campers can do a dance with the praise or put it in their pockets.
