Respond to Reading Have campers open their notebooks. Explain that they will use the web from the previous lesson to write about how they know that education was important to Malala. Model In the previous lesson, we learned about some of the important events in Malala’s life, and how these events helped to shape her views on education. What

are some of the things we learned? Give campers time to discuss and share. Why do you think Malala felt that using her voice was so important? Turn and talk with a partner. Give campers time to talk and share their thinking. Now, we’re going to write about how you know that education was important to Malala. Write the following prompt and sentence frame on the board: Explain how you know education was important to Malala. I know education was important to Malala because __________________________. Practice Have campers refer to the details in their webs to explain how they know that education was important to Malala. Have them write in their notebooks using the frame provided and the details they gathered from the book to support their thinking. If time permits, have them draw a picture to go with their sentences. Clarify Remind campers that in order to help readers better understand the subject of a biography (the person it’s about), the author will focus on the important events of the subject’s life. CLOSING CAMPFIRE Reflection Question Have partners turn knee-to-knee and discuss this question. In the book, Malala shows courage by speaking up for what she believes is right. How did she change your thinking about courage and what it means to be courageous? What did you learn from her experience? Praise and Affirmation Offer concrete praise and affirmation for campers’ efforts and accomplishments today. Shooting Stars Dance With the group, throw shooting stars (pretend to throw a basketball into a hoop). Campers can do a dance with the praise or put it in their pockets.
