READ ALOUD: Hope for Winter Hope for Winter 35 MIN Introduce Vocabulary
To support comprehension, teach new vocabulary words before reading the book. Encourage campers to use the words in their discussions during the lesson.
WORDS TO KNOW
companion: someone who spends time with another
prosthetic: an artificial replacement body part that is designed to look and work like a real body part
urgent: very serious and needing quick attention
Before Reading Show the cover of the book and read the title and the names of the authors. Say: Today, we are going to read a book called Hope for Winter. Look at the photos on the front and back covers of the book. What animals are in the photos? Give campers a moment to respond. What do you know about dolphins? Invite volunteers to share what they know. What do you notice about the dolphins in these pictures? Invite volunteers to share their observations. Campers might notice that one of the dolphins has a prosthetic tail. Explain that a prosthetic tail is an artificial tail that works just like a real tail. Invite a discussion about why a dolphin might need a prosthetic tail.
MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Support campers in understanding that prosthetics can be made for both humans and animals. Consider showing several pictures or models of human and animal prosthetics so campers better understand how these devices function.
This story is about two dolphins. Like all living things, dolphins need certain things to stay alive. What do you think dolphins might need to survive? Turn and share your ideas with a partner. Give campers a moment to discuss, then invite several partners to share their answers with the group.
