WRITING POWER 25 MIN
Respond to Reading Make sure campers have their copies of Hope for Winter and their notebooks open to the graphic organizer for this lesson. Campers will revisit the book, paying close attention to the problems Hope faces and the solutions the animal experts come up with. They will use details from the text to prepare for a writing activity about how the animal experts help Hope survive. Draw a chart on the board or on chart paper. (Refer to the graphic organizer for this lesson in the Graphic Organizers section.) As you guide campers to find details in the book, model filling in your chart while campers fill in their own.
MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Revisit the text and photographs in Hope for Winter and use sticky notes to help campers identify and write words that show the problems Hope faces and the ways the experts solve those problems. Ask questions to make sure campers understand the problems and their solutions. Allow campers to draw their ideas as needed.
Model Campers, in today’s story, we learned about a dolphin named Hope who was rescued. Who are some of the people who help her survive? Give campers a minute to discuss and share. Let’s reread to look for the problems that Hope faced and the ways in which the animal experts found solutions to those problems. Read aloud from page 10, which begins, “In the wild, baby dolphins drink milk ...” What is one of the first problems Hope faces? What does she need? What solution do the experts come up with to help her? Give campers time to talk and share their ideas. Hope needs milk, so they put a fish milkshake in a bottle to give her something to eat. Let’s add this detail to the chart. Record the detail in your chart as campers fill in the charts in their notebooks. Practice Have campers work with partners to find other solutions the animal experts came up with to help Hope survive. Clarify Tell campers that in the next lesson, they will use the details they gathered in their notebooks to write about how the animal experts helped Hope survive. CLOSING CAMPFIRE 15 MIN Reflection Question Have partners turn knee-to-knee and discuss this question. Do you think Hope is a good name for the dolphin in this story? Why or why not? Praise and Affirmation Offer concrete praise and affirmation for campers’ efforts and accomplishments today. Shooting Stars Dance With the group, throw shooting stars (pretend to throw a basketball into a hoop). Campers can do a dance with the praise or put it in their pockets.
