Before Reading Invite campers turn to recap the previous lesson’s read-aloud, then have volunteers share with the group. Campers should mention these key points: Winter was a dolphin who lost her tail and was taken to an aquarium to receive help. She was given a prosthetic tail so she could swim. Several years later, another dolphin was rescued in the same part of Florida. She was taken to the same aquarium and was given the name Hope. Veterinarians and other animal experts introduced her to Panama, an older dolphin, and to Winter. Hope and Winter formed a strong bond, and they lived together at the aquarium. Note Hope for Winter does not have numbers printed on the pages of the book. To help you navigate the text, count the first page of text, which includes a note to readers, as page 1. You may wish to write page numbers in pencil at the bottom of each page. Go Deep
MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Find a photo that represents each word. For example, a photo of a veterinarian examining an animal for examination, an image of a coral reef for marine, or a photo of a physical therapy session for rehabilitation. As you show the picture, say the word, and have campers repeat it after you. Show the word in the book, say it again, then have the camper point to the word and say it.
Let campers know that you’re going to discuss the book together. Reread the sections as indicated to provide context for the prompts. Make sure campers use evidence from the text in their answers. You may wish to have campers discuss their ideas with partners, then have volunteers share with the group. Open some questions to whole-group discussion. Encourage all campers to participate. Note that each discussion prompt is followed by possible responses. Page 4 Reread the page that begins, “Exactly five years and one day earlier …” How did animal experts help Winter after she lost her tail? Why is a tail so important to a dolphin? Possible responses: They gave Winter a prosthetic tail so that she could continue to swim. A dolphin must have a tail to be able to swim, breathe, and eat.
