SPOTLIGHT ON LANGUAGE Point out the phrase “Exactly five years and one day earlier” that begins on page 4. Explain to campers that the authors include words and phrases related to time throughout the book. The events in the story really happened, so these words and phrases help readers understand when they took place. Guide them to identify other examples, such as “About a year and a half” (page 14), “Today” (page 23), and “Founded in 1972” (page 25).

Possible responses: She was speed swimming, which is a sign of distress. Her heart was also beating too quickly, and she was very dehydrated. Page 15 Reread the page that begins, “They spent most of their time together …” Why did the experts think Winter needed a new companion? Possible responses: Her companion Panama was older and not likely to live much longer. Page 20 Reread the page that begins, “The three dolphins had tons of fun …” What caused the experts to be worried about Hope and Winter? What did they discover? Possible responses: The experts were worried because Hope and Winter had already lost their mothers, and Panama was like their grandmother. They also worried that Hope and Winter might not bond. But they discovered that the dolphins had become friends. Page 23 Reread the page that begins, “Today, Winter and Hope are more than fine …” Why do you think people are inspired by Hope and Winter’s story? Possible responses: Hope and Winter have survived difficult things. They’ve given people an opportunity to learn more about dolphins and how special they are. Pages 30–31 Reread the two pages that begin with, “Dolphin Facts.” Why do you think the authors included additional facts about dolphins? Possible responses: The authors included these pages so readers can learn more about dolphin habitats, characteristics, and behaviors.
