LitCamp Reimagined! | Grade 3 Leader Guide Green Bunk

READING POWER 20 MIN Word-Reading Skill Review Note Take time during this last lesson to have campers take the Word-Reading Skills Check-in. Use the results to measure and report growth during LitCamp. In this lesson, you will review the word-reading skill with campers. In the following lesson, campers will play a game to practice the skill, strengthen comprehension, and demonstrate understanding. Identify Homophone Pairs Remind LitCampers that homophones are words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings. Display and read tail and tale . Say: The word tail, t-a-i-l , names an animal’s body part. The word tale, t-a-l-e , is another word for “story.” Discuss how campers can figure out which meaning is meant when they read a text. Say: We first read the words on the page using what we know about spelling to determine what the word is. We use the other words in the sentence to help us understand the correct meaning of the word. Listen to this sentence: “That tail is really long.” By listening to that sentence out loud, you might not know if I’m talking about an animal or a story. But if I say, “Look at that T-rex. That tail is really long!”, you know I can only be talking about the word t-a-i-l . I can also say something like, “I read a tale about how the T-rex lost his tail.”

BRING THE TEXT TO LIFE 20 MIN

Reading Fluency For the fluency practice, you may use the decodable passage and routines provided here or choose a passage from the book and the fluency routine that works best for your group. A strong wind sends a swarm of mosquitoes across the sea to a blue whale. The whale slaps its heavy tail, turning hundreds of mosquitoes into fish food. That was fast! The whale won the battle, right? Not quite. The bugs bit the whale before it disappeared! Its skin is just so thick. It didn’t know. More mosquitoes stick around to wait for the whale. It resurfaces. The mosquitoes enter its mouth and attack!

MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS Define key vocabulary words such as swarm, resurfaces, inject, virus, and cells before reading the passage. Use the illustrations and text features in Who Would Win? to support campers’ understanding of the meanings. Have campers practice pronouncing any words with challenging sounds.
