That’s Not It! Objective Practice listening skills.
Directions Explain that this game requires strong listening skills. Gather campers in a circle. On the board, write a sentence, such as: I went to the park yesterday where I saw a boy in a red hat riding a blue bicycle around a pond. Explain that the first player will read the sentence aloud. The player to their right will say, “That’s not it!” That player will repeat the sentence but replace one word, such as: I went to the park yesterday where I saw a boy in a striped hat riding a blue bicycle around a pond. Play continues this way, with each player changing one word. The final player in the circle says “Yes, that’s it!” Go! Write a sentence on the board (make it as simple or as complex as you think your group can handle). Choose a player to begin and have them read the sentence aloud. The player to their right says, “That’s not it!” and repeats the sentence, changing one word. Play continues this way until you reach the final player. Encourage campers to be supportive of one another and offer hints if players forget parts of the sentence. Drama Dictionary Objective Players use gestures, physical actions, facial expressions, sounds— anything but words—to give teammates clues to help them guess a word from your lessons’ Words to Know. Directions Display a selection of the Words to Know your group has studied so far. Then, write individual words with their definitions on index cards. Divide the group into two teams. Choose or have teams choose the player on each team who will give the clues to their team first. Give that player a word card. That player may say other words and synonyms as clues to the word being guessed, but the player MAY NOT use the word on the card (or any part of that word) as a clue. Campers on each team work together to guess the word. If they guess the word, they have to define it. Campers earn bonus points if they spell the word correctly. If a player’s team doesn’t guess the word, the opposing team may try to guess it. Go! Give the player offering clues a card with the word and its definition on it. Set a timer for three minutes and say, “Go!” Listen to be sure players don’t say parts of the word being guessed in their clues.
